However, the fact that you can ReWire it into most other DAWs makes it useful to run as a plugin itself. Some might say it doesn't need to, but it's a versatility thing, and it really makes it not ideal at all for mixing and mastering. My problem with it is simply the fact that it cannot host any external plugins. Reason is probably the best software you can use for straight up "beatmaking." It's easy, concise and comes with a lot of really great sounds and modules. Right out of the box, it doesn't have as expansive a sound library as a lot of those that are designed more for making beats, but it's still quite capable. There are TONS of plugins that are great for it, but it takes some time and skill to get it all working together. Personally, I do use it when making beats and composing, but I use it in conjunction with other software. It's quite capable when it comes to just about everything, but it all comes down to how you want to use it. Pro Tools doesn't really have any one specific purpose when it comes to the recording arts. Those last 3 are likely the main reason why your favourite producers are using it as well. Not to mention the quite uniques strengths that Pro Tools has over the others when it comes down pure audio recording / editing and mixing.
None of them however imo have the combined strengths that pro tools offers.
All of the other programs have their strengths and all of them can be EXTREMELY cool to do certain things which you would have a hard time doing in pro tools. You would have to do that for any of the other softwares you mention as well. Sound wise it is as good as the sounds you put into it. Of course you can use Pro Tools for midi beats. If we were comparing Pro Tools 4.3 to Logic back in those days I would probably have to admit that you might have a slightly easier time making midi beats in Logic.
